The Berlin Fire Company much like the community we serve, is a work in progress. We strive to serve the best that we can. As our lives get more and more busy, it is harder to find people in the community who are willing to sacrifice the time from their families to become part of the fire company. But, for those that do, the rewards and satisfaction you get is well worth it.

Leadership includes not only seizing the initiative but also challenging others to improve the communities we serve. We strive to be creative, thoughtful and innovative in our efforts to serve as the respected resource for regional philanthropy.
Collaboration with interested parties will make it possible to facilitate the most favorable solutions for those we serve; to build consensus in the face of adversity; and to empower others to build lasting partnerships. We embrace our shared responsibility in working toward productive solutions.
Transparency is the best way to prove to others that we are upholding our values. It makes mutual trust possible and helps make our actions understandable. We expect to provide information that will give stakeholders more power and the freedom to make informed decisions.
Respect means operating in a spirit of cooperation and valuing human dignity. It includes embracing different cultures, recognizing unique needs, and honoring diversity. We endeavor to treat others as we expect to be treated.

Built in 1922, the Germantown School is an original Tuskegee-design two room school financed through the Rosenwald Rural School Building Program, a public/private partnership made possible through the vision of Booker T. Washington and Julius Rosenwald and dedicated to the improvement of educational facilities for African American students throughout the southern United States. One of 5000 Rosenwald schools in operation across the country by the 1930s, the Germantown School educated students from its opening in 1922 through its closure in the 1950s.
The legacy of the Germantown School did not end with its closing. After being converted into a county garage in the early 1960s, it was restored to its original condition through the same type of public/private partnership effort that led to its founding. Community members received the deed to the school in 2000 and worked together to not only restore the school building, but also to reaffirm its mission of education and community enrichment.
The restored Germantown school boast a museum that transports visitors back to this important time in our collective history. In addition, the Germantown Community Heritage Center hosts regular educational, cultural and community events, ensuring its continuing role as welcoming gathering place for the community, a place for all people.

SUMC Spirit Kitchen
In February 2011, a small group of members at our church heeded God’s call to provide a free food ministry in Berlin. As a result, the “Spirit Kitchen” at Stevenson United Methodist Church was born, and it has blossomed into a community ministry that continues to grow each week. The Spirit Kitchen ministry offers a free lunch on Wednesdays at our Church (located at 123 N. Main Street in Berlin) from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Each week, dedicated groups of volunteer’s shop, prepare, and serve meals to anyone who comes to our doors. On an average each week, the kitchen serves 80-100 meals and provides bags of groceries to 60-80 families. The Pantry offers “blessing bags” which include socks, T-shirt, and non refrigerated items.

What is 4-H?
4-H is delivered by Cooperative Extension, a community of more than 100 public universities across the nation that provides experiences where young people learn by doing. Youth complete hands-on projects and recordkeeping in areas like health, science, agriculture, and citizenship, in a positive environment where they receive guidance from adult mentors and are encouraged to take on proactive leadership roles. Youth can experience 4‑H in every county and parish in the country—through in-school and after-school programs, school and community clubs and 4‑H camps. 4‑H programs are available for children ages 8-18. 4‑H Cloverbud programs are available for children ages 5-7.
