Member Spotlight: Matt the Carpet Guy
Every business has a story. And together, the stories of Berlin Chamber members shape a community that keeps growing and drawing people in.
Matt the Carpet Guy is one of those businesses woven into the fabric of this place. A generous Chamber sponsor and locally owned flooring company, Matt and his team handle the sale, installation, repair, and cleaning of carpet and luxury vinyl plank flooring. With locations in Selbyville, DE and Salisbury, MD, they serve the entire Eastern Shore.
1. Tell us how Matt the Carpet Guy started. Was there a specific moment that pushed you forward, or did it happen more gradually?
I started out as an installer working for another company. Over time I realized I wanted to take a shot at building something on my own. So I started small. Just me and my van, taking on jobs and building relationships. As the business grew we opened our first storefront, and eventually expanded to a second location in Salisbury.
2. Walk us through what a typical day actually looks like for you. What would people be surprised by?
I’m typically at my store by 6:30 in the morning getting my install guys set up for the day. After that it’s everything until we close. Helping customers in the showroom, running out to job sites, staying on top of the install schedule. There’s a lot going on to keep things moving and make sure jobs get done right.
3. What’s something your customers don’t see that would surprise them?
Outside of flooring I’m actually a big roller skater. It’s something I picked up early on and never put down. One of my favorite memories was taking a trip to Florida with my daughter Stella. We ended up at a rink that needed someone to jump in as the mascot on skates, so I stepped up and had a blast.
4. What’s something that took longer to figure out than you expected, and what did it teach you?
Learning how to manage the business side while still staying involved in the day to day. Early on I was focused mostly on the work itself. But as we grew I had to learn how to manage people, scheduling, and customer satisfaction all at once. It taught me the importance of communication and having a team you can actually rely on.
5. Who in this community has made a real difference to your business, and how?
My videographer Tyler has made a huge difference. Since joining the team last May he has helped grow our presence in a way that feels personal. People get to see who we are and what we are about. Being able to keep our content fresh has been one of my favorite parts of where we are right now.
6. What’s a common misconception about your industry?
That all flooring products and buying experiences are basically the same no matter where you go. In reality there can be a big difference in quality, availability, and the level of guidance you get. A lot of customers are surprised by how much easier the process can be when you have the right team helping you through it.
7. What’s something you’re proud of that doesn’t show up in your marketing?
People see that we like to have fun and don’t take ourselves too seriously, which is true. But what they might not realize is how much experience is behind the scenes. Our team knows flooring inside and out and we take a lot of pride in doing things the right way. Easy to work with and genuinely knowledgeable. That combination matters.
8. How has Selbyville shaped your business, and how has your business shaped this place?
With how much this area has grown, especially with people moving here, it has helped our business grow right along with it. We have met a lot of new customers who are just getting settled and need someone they can rely on. Helping homeowners make their spaces feel like home is a great feeling.
9. What advice would you give someone thinking about starting a business here?
Go for it, but be ready to work hard for it. This is a great area to build something, especially with how much it is growing. Stay consistent and take care of your customers. If you do right by people and stay patient, it can turn into something special.
10. What’s next for you, and what are you most excited about?
Getting into the Kent County area and hopefully opening a location there soon. It is something we have been working toward and it will be great to bring what we do to even more people.
Matt the Carpet Guy continues to grow and serve this community in ways that go well beyond flooring. Keep an eye on their upcoming developments on Facebook and YouTube.
