Since 1996 the Maryland Coastal Bays Program has worked to weave economic and environmental prosperity into one.
Through education and outreach programs, restoration projects and involvement with the business community, builders, residents, visitors and government leaders, the Maryland Coastal Bays Program works to improve water quality, protect habitat and enhance forests and wetlands.
MCBP partners, along with local farmers, fisherman, business owners and scientists, have produced the first ever Coastal Bays Comprehensive Conservation Management Plan (CCMP link).
This plan represents a consensus of the best means needed to preserve the economic and ecological prosperity of the coastal bays in the next century. With help from local, state and federal planners and scientists, strategies include reachable scientific goals and the most effective means for implementing them.
Community support has created this plan and will drive it in the future. Ultimately it is the residents of this estuary who are the arbiters of its prosperity.

Snow Hill, MD
Canoeing, kayaking, and paddle board rentals, small tin boat rental, boat and tackle sales located in Pocomoke, MD.
Pocomoke River Canoe Company – Snow Hill Maryland – convenient to Ocean City MD.
Canoeing the Pocomoke River from Snow Hill MD. The Pocomoke River Canoe Company offers an unsurpassed way to experience one of Delmarva’s natural wonders.
Paddle gently in one of our Old Town canoes or kayaks through shady caverns of foliage. Novice or experienced paddlers will find the flatwater Pocomoke River a delight!
See the sun-dappled surface glisten as you paddle past fallen logs, clusters of pink or white blossomed water lilies, or the exposed “knees” of the bald cypress. The Pocomoke River corridor is home to the northernmost reaches of the cypress, and provides a selection of various wildlife species that are usually found only in more southern regions.
Watch carefully to see a bald eagle that may swoop overhead, or be startled by an osprey or great blue heron as it swooshes by. Egrets are often seen wading in the river’s swampy reaches.
Notice sun-worshipping turtles basking on a log. The shy turtles retreat to the river if you approach too quickly. Playful otters streak by, diving and searching for their supper. Fish for the scrappy gar – our “freshwater marlin” – or for largemouth bass, catfish, shad, yellow and white perch, pickerels and eels.
Exercise your sense of wonder at the marvelous birds that flit through the undergrowth at the river’s edge where white-tailed deer often pause to drink. Accept the challenge of the wind and tide on the open reaches of the river near the 300-year-old village of Snow Hill. You’ll be glad you chose to come to the Eastern Shore, to Worcester County, to our Pocomoke River. Snow Hill MD and the Pocomoke River departure at the Canoe Company is within a 30 to 45 minute drive from Ocean City MD and other nearby Coastal Maryland and Delaware areas.
A day on the Pocomoke is a day in paradise.
…to Rackliffe House, a 1740s merchant-planter’s home overlooking Assateague Island and scenic Sinepuxent Bay. Rackliffe House was constructed in the 1740s by Captain Charles Rackliffe, the merchant-planter grandson of one of the earliest English immigrants to Maryland’s seaside. The large two-story, three-bay Manor House features Flemish bond brickwork with random glazed headers, a steeply pitched gabled roof with kicked eaves, and large windows. Captain Rackliffe intended the house to be seen across the water. He built it on a prominent ridge atop a man-made terrace with expansive views of the water and island.
In its time, Rackliffe House has witnessed marauding Spanish galleons, Barbary pirate ships, and English men-of-war. The house has stood through the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. Today, thanks to the restoration efforts of the Rackliffe House Trust and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, historic Rackliffe House now serves as a coastal museum that interprets 18th-century life along Maryland’s seaside.
